Our Experiences with Couchsurfing

by faithstravels on August 31, 2018August 31, 2018 in New Zealand, Recommended Accomodation, Taiwan, Transitions to Travel Life

Back when we still owned a house in North Carolina, my mom would welcome international travelers to stay with us. She found these travelers, or they found her, through a world-wide online platform called couchsurfing.com.

Faith's Travels

This traveling trio is comprised of a mom and two daughters from the USA. Of the two daughters, there's Grace who has Down syndrome and Faith who writes this blog. Hey! In May 2015, we traded in a home and belongings for backpacks. Now we just have Bibles, empty plans, and the world before us. Let's go see what's out there. :)

We’re on the island of Jersey now, the largest of the Channel Islands. 🎉 Even though it’s the biggest, this island is only 9 by 5 miles! Today I met the owner of some cute Jersey cows and yesterday tried the amazing Jersey ice cream with some friends we hadn’t seen in many years! 😍🍦 People from Jersey say they are *definitely* not part of England. Jersey has its own Jersey pound currency and its own language: Jersey French. Unfortunately the language is dying out. Jersey is only 14 miles from the coast of France. This island way back in the day (10th century) used to be part of the Duchy of Normandy— so all the names and roads etc here are in French. The Germans occupied the island for 5 years during the war.. and so there are still bunkers all over the place. The first picture, in fact, was taken from the top of a bunker. 😆 The cutest, most Scottish-esque town we’ve seen so far. 😍 So… after renting a car and exploring northern Scotland for two weeks, we’ve begun a Workaway (work exchange) near Saint Andrew’s, Scotland at a nuclear bunker built in 1951 for the Cold War. The WiFi speeds in the bunker are ridiculously fast 😂 There’s an area of Kalmar, Sweden called “the garden” —it’s an area you can walk through of little “cottages” where some swedes stay in the summer— all of which had the most gorgeous gardens 😍🌹 Some pretty bits of Malmö, Sweden 🇸🇪 Dancing the evening away in Malmö, Sweden~ 💃🏻 This is European camping. 😆 It’s a bit different from in the US… We’ve been camping for 3 months already— through Poland, Israel, and Sweden. And our tent made it onto the Swedish news! The news reporters said there has been a massive surge in campers here in the past two years and were interviewing people, including my mom, to find out why. (I think we all know why.) — It has been a very rainy and chilly July up here in Scandinavia. Everyone is siked to see the sun today. #malmo #sweden It’s been really rainy and cold in Sweden lately— so I Googled “sunniest spots in Sweden.” This town came up in the archipelago region — we were told that Swedes like to spend there summers there. We found a good campground and came over. Gorgeous area, but so far, it’s still raining. 😆 ☔️ Rain or shine though, we’re always in good hands! 😊🙏 #karlskrona #sweden Picture of the day 🇸🇪
